Shopping & Food

There are many different options for buying groceries, basic necessities and any other supplies needed both on-campus and in the community surrounding the campus in Salaya. In addition, Bangkok city center, which is easily accessible from Salaya, is a major international destination offering an endless variety of choice.

On Campus Options

There are many nice, affordable eateries on-campus.  The main cafeteria in the Student Union has a large selection of Thai rice and noodle dishes costing 20 - 30 baht, and inexpensive drinks.  Many university buildings also have smaller, inexpensive cafeterias, coffee shops and food stalls that are dotted around the campus.

A lively weekly market is held every Friday until 2:00 outside the College of Sports Science and Technology and the Faculty of Environment and Resource Studies.  The market features a large variety of food stalls serving freshly cooked Thai dishes as well as a variety of low cost goods, especially clothing.   Special Mahidol events held throughout the year often feature markets as well.

At Mahidol University International College, a more upscale restaurant on the second floor, the Herb Garden offers lunch buffets for 160 baht per person Tuesday and Thursday and a 195 baht set menu on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. The Princess Café, located behind the Food Science Lab, Faculty of Science, has both indoor and outdoor café seating, and serves fresh coffee and Western-style dishes.

Several stores on campus stock a  variety of basic convenience items, two of which are located very close to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.  The Get It store at the The Faculty of Environment and Resource Building stocks groceries, personal and household products, gifts and assorted items.  In the Faculty of Science Building the University Cooperative Store sells similar items,  in addition to having a Post Office and the University Bookstore which sells textbooks, school supplies, newspapers, sports equipment, Mahidol University souvenirs and similar items (teaching staff holding a Mahidol identity card receive a 10% discount; student discounts are also occasionally offered).

Off Campus Options

Close to Mahidol Salaya campus, the commercial district on Phuttamonthon 4 Road (across from the main entrance to the campus), offers many shops, food stalls, and restaurants.  As well, across the road from the University condominiums, is a yellow roofed  open air daily market, the Dalat Salaya.  A large variety of fresh fruit and vegetables, as well as prepared foods and basic cooking supplies, can be purchased here at a low cost.

Shopping for major items and groceries can also be conveniently done in the Pinklao area (west of the Chao Phraya River (approximately 25-30 minutes from Salaya by blue bus No. 124). Pinklao houses the large Pata Department Store, Tesco Lotus  a Major Cineplex and the Central Plaza shopping complex.
