This afternoon we enjoyed the privilege of visiting the World Bank Office in the heart of downtown Bangkok. What was more, we met with a senior economist with the Bank, namely Mr Shabih Ali Mohib, who shared not only the basic information about their organization but also his expert opinion regarding the issues we face in the region.

The most useful lesson we gained from listening to his eye-opening and frank remarks and answers to our questions is the link between development, poverty and human rights. Although the Bank’s current mandate is to reduce poverty through improving governance over the world, we could infer from our open discussions in the Q&A session after his introductory speech about the Bank that social life nowadays is highly complicated and all the economic, political and social forces are creating a sophisticated human environment.

In short, we have come to learn that all these economic, social, political, cultural, ethnic, and religious factors and forces must be considered in order to understand human rights violations and to prevent and protect them as well.
