Critical Connections : Human Rights, Development Studies and the Social Sciences Conference

The CHRSD at Mahidol University, in collaboration with the Faculty of Political Science, Chulalongkorn University organized an international conference entitled "Critical Connections : Human Rights, Development Studies and the Social Sciences" held on 8 October 2009 at the Salaya Pavilion Hotel, Mahidol University. In total, there were 57 participants, consisting of graduate students, PHD students, academics and human rights activists. The guest speaker, Mr. Ramesh Singh, Chief Executive Officer of ActionAid International delivered a keynote speech on "Human Rights and Development," available here

Panelists had an opportunity to present their academic work in six sub-themes: Migration and Human Rights, Political Issues and Human Rights, Human Rights Education, Concerns in Political Economy, Current Issues in Development, Human Rights and Civil Society. Asian Thematic Training

The one-week Asian Thematic Programme was an annual training initiated in 2004 after the success of the SEAHR. Themes for these trainings shifted year by year according to the current human rights situations in Asia. In total, the thematic trainings had 72 participants from 19 countries.
The Thematic Programmes were used to examine a specific and critical issue in human rights (and peace) within the wider Asia region. They allowed a greater focus than the advanced training and brought together specialists on a selected issue. Organized with the support of RWI/Sida, the trainings were run in October or November of each year, on the following themes:

• Human Rights and Humanitarian Laws (2004)
• Emerging Issues in Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (2005)
• From Conflict to Peace: Does Human Rights Matter? (2006)

South East Asia Advanced Program in Human Rights (SEAHR)

In 2002, the CHRSD in cooperation with Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law (RWI), Lund University, Sweden with the support of the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida) developed the Southeast Asia Advanced Programme on Human Rights (SEAHR), a two-week training in Bangkok for 25 participants from the region.

The objectives of the training programs were to improve the knowledge of human rights in the region by targeting human rights professionals including government officers, academics, and human rights workers in regional or international organizations, and NGOs of varying sizes. The trainings allow people who are unable to undertake an academic program in human rights to have access to learning opportunities which increases their knowledge of human rights.The content was divided into two parts which included an overview of international human rights standards and protection mechanisms, and an examination of the status of human rights in SEA. The specific issues addressed each year changed from one year to another in order to respond to the changing situation.

From 2002 - 2006, the SEAHR had in total 120 people from 11 countries.
