The vision of the CHRSD is to be a leading international center for learning and research in Human Rights, and its relationship to peace and development, with a focus on Asia.

Mission of the Center for Human Rights Studies and Social Development

The Mission of the CHRSD, by which it will achieve this vision, is threefold:


To build human rights and peace culture through education and academic outreach programs
To strengthen research which contributes to a greater understanding and realization of human rights, peace and just development
To serve as a regional center and be a catalyst for academic excellence and knowledge-based advocacy in human rights

The CHRSD

is located at Mahidol University Salaya Campus, Nakornpathom Province. It was established in 1996 by Mahidol University with the aim of providing education and research opportunities in the area of human rights. The CHRSD runs a Graduate Program in Human Rights, leading to a Masters of Human Rights, an International PhD course in Human Rights and Peace Studies, and recently opened a Masters of Human Rights in Thai language. The Office also runs research projects and related activities such as targeted human rights trainings for human rights professionals.

About Mahidol University

Mahidol University was originally established in 1890 by His Majesty King Chulalongkorn the Great (Rama V) as the medical school of Sirirat Hospital. In 1969, His Majesty King Bumibol Adulyadej the Great (Rama IX) granted the university the name "Mahidol" in honor of his father, His Royal Highness Prince Mahidol of Songkhla.

The University has broadened from its base of medical science to incorporate 14 faculties. It is one of Thailand's leaders in internationalization of higher education, collaborating with numerous universities around the world. Its staff have won number of international awards including the Magsaysay awards and recognition from the National Research Council of Thailand. Currently Mahidol University has around 24,000 students, about 6,000 of whom who study at the graduate level.
